Life#
Osman Nahid Efendi was born in Trabzon in 1855/56 (AH 1272) into the Muslim (Müslüman) community. Schooling took seven years, at a middle school (Rüşdiye Mektebi); Osman Nahid also held a qualification (a diploma, certificate, training or decoration).
Work began in Trabzon in 1876/77, at about 20, paid from the start, on 400 kuruş a month. The annual lists begin in 1887/88, with Osman Nahid as a communications official (Muhabere Memuru) in Bandırma. Osman Nahid then moved to Komotini (Gümülcine) and Karaağaç from 1888 to 1896. The last posts were in Bandırma again from 1896 to 1900.
The salary went from 400 kuruş a month in 1887/88 to 475 in 1892/93, the peak, as Muhabere Memuru in Karaağaç, when 43 per cent of paid officials earned less. Over 13 years pay ended where it began, at 400 kuruş. The last annual entry is for 1899/1900; the list of 1900/01 (AH 1318) gives the status word Vefat (death).
