Life#
Mehmet Hulusi Bey was born in Istanbul in 1854/55 (AH 1271) into the Muslim (Müslüman) community; the father's occupation was "Ustabasi". Schooling took seven years, at a middle school (Rüşdiye Mektebi); Mehmet Hulusi also attended the telegraph school.
Mehmet Hulusi began work in Istanbul in 1870/71, at about 16, with three unpaid years as a mülazım (apprentice) before a first salary of 120 kuruş. The annual lists begin in 1873/74, with Mehmet Hulusi as an official (Memur) in Istanbul, the birthplace, where the entries run to 1879/80, with a rise to a post in the accounts office (Muhasebe Kalemi) in 1875/76. From 1880 to 1907 every annual entry places Mehmet Hulusi in Mabeyni humayun, with a rise to communications official (Muhabere Memuru).
The salary went from 120 kuruş a month in 1873/74 to 2,600 in 1903/04, the peak, as Muhabere Memuru in Mabeyni humayun, when 98 per cent of paid officials earned less.
