Life#
Mahmut Galib Efendi was born in Istanbul in 1853/54 (AH 1270) into the Muslim (Müslüman) community; the father was an army major (binbaşı). Schooling took seven years, at a middle school (Rüşdiye Mektebi); Mahmut Galib also attended the telegraph school.
Mahmut Galib began work in Istanbul in 1871/72, at about 17, with two unpaid years as a mülazım (apprentice) before a first salary of 120 kuruş. From 1873/74 to 1892/93 every annual entry places Mahmut Galib in Istanbul, the birthplace, with four changes of title, from accounts office (Muhasebe Kalemi) to council clerkship (Meclis Kitabeti) in 1892/93.
Pay rose from 120 kuruş a month in 1873/74 to a peak of 900 in 1888/89, in the clerkship of the chief director's office (Başmüdür Kitabeti) in Istanbul, when 83 per cent of paid officials earned less. Over 21 years the salaries add up to 132,360 kuruş, about what an official on the median salary earned. After the last annual entry, for 1892/93, the list of 1893/94 (AH 1311) gives the status word Vefat (death).
