Life#
Mehmet Ali Efendi was born in Izmir (İzmir) in 1852/53 (AH 1269), into the Muslim (Müslüman) community. Schooling took four years, at a school for young children (Sıbyan Mektebi).
Mehmet Ali began work in the Zaptiye Kalemi in Istanbul in 1873/74, at about 20, paid from the start, on 100 kuruş a month. The first annual entry, for 1873/74, places Mehmet Ali in Istanbul as Nefer, where the entries run to 1878/79. From 1879 to 1907 every annual entry places Mehmet Ali in Beyoğlu, with five changes of title, from policeman (Polis) to chief police commissioner (Başkomiser) in 1899/1900.
Pay rose from 100 kuruş a month in 1873/74 to a peak of 940 in 1899/1900, as Başkomiser in Beyoğlu, when 88 per cent of paid officials earned less. Over 35 years the salaries add up to 217,860 kuruş, about what an official on the median salary earned. The final annual entry is for 1906/07. Mehmet Ali received a rank (rütbe), the Mecidi order and two medals ("Gumus iftihar"; "Hicaz demiryolu").
