Life#
Süleyman Sabri Efendi was born in Istanbul in 1844/45 (AH 1260) into the Muslim (Müslüman) community. Schooling took seven years, at a middle school (Rüşdiye Mektebi); Süleyman Sabri also attended the telegraph school and held a qualification (a diploma, certificate, training or decoration).
Süleyman Sabri began work in Istanbul in 1866/67, at about 22, with one unpaid year as a mülazım (apprentice) before a first salary of 400 kuruş. The first annual entry, for 1867/68, places Süleyman Sabri in Didymoteicho (Dimetoka) as a communications official (Muhabere Memuru). Süleyman Sabri then moved to four places in six years, with a rise to travelling postal official (Seyyar Memur) in 1873/74. From 1876 to 1907 every annual entry places Süleyman Sabri in Beyoğlu, first as Muhabere Memuru, from 1894/95 in the collections office (Tahsilat Kalemi) and from 1903/04 as a chief communications official (Başmuhabere Memuru). Few careers in the lists are as long; fewer than 3 per cent of the 5,211 officials have entries spanning 41 years or more.
The salary went from 400 kuruş a month in 1867/68 to 1,100 in 1905/06, the peak, as Başmuhabere Memuru in Beyoğlu, when nine in ten paid officials earned less.
