Life#
Osman Nuri Efendi was born in Kemaliye (Eğin) in 1844/45 (AH 1260) into the Muslim (Müslüman) community. Schooling took four years, at a school for young children (Sıbyan Mektebi); Osman Nuri also attended the telegraph school.
At about 20, in 1864/65, Osman Nuri began work in Istanbul, with three unpaid years as a mülazım (apprentice) before a first salary of 400 kuruş. The first annual entry, for 1867/68, places Osman Nuri in Bihać (Bihke) as a communications official (Muhabere Memuru). The annual lists then follow Osman Nuri to Sjenica in 1869/70, then Gacko from 1870 to 1876. Osman Nuri then moved to Foča (Foça), Mitrovica (Mitroviça), Niğde, Malatya and Harput, five places in ten years, with a rise to director of the second grade (2. Müdür) in 1880/81. From 1885 to 1897 the annual entries place Osman Nuri in Dersim. Nine places on two continents in all, a number reached by fewer than 6 per cent of the 5,200 officials with a place of service.
Pay rose from 400 kuruş a month in 1867/68 to a peak of 800 in 1876/77, as Muhabere Memuru in Foča, when two in three paid officials earned less. In all, 31 years of salary come to 235,080 kuruş, 1.2 times what an official on the median salary earned in those years. The last annual entry is for 1896/97.
