Life#
Anastasyadi Hristo Efendi was born in Istanbul in 1843/44 (AH 1259) into the Greek Orthodox Christian (Rum) community; the father was a tradesman (esnaf). Schooling took four years, at a Greek Orthodox school (Rum Mektebi); Anastasyadi Hristo also wrote French and Greek (Rum).
At about 23, in 1866/67, Anastasyadi Hristo began work in Istanbul, with one unpaid year as a mülazım (apprentice) before a first salary of 150 kuruş. Every annual entry from 1867/68 to 1895/96 places Anastasyadi Hristo in the same office, foreign accounts office (Muhasebat-ı Ecnebiye Kalemi), in Istanbul, the birthplace. A career like this is rare; 13 of the 775 officials whose entries span 30 years or more kept one title in one place throughout.
Pay rose from 150 kuruş a month in 1867/68 to a peak of 710 in 1893/94, when 76 per cent of paid officials earned less. Over 30 years the salaries add up to 190,560 kuruş, about what an official on the median salary earned.
