Life#
Born in Istanbul in 1843/44 (AH 1259), Ahmet Nuri Bey came from the Muslim (Müslüman) community. At about 23, in 1866/67, Ahmet Nuri began work in the telegraph service (Telgraf) in Istanbul, with three unpaid years as a mülazım (apprentice) before a first salary of 100 kuruş. The first annual entry, for 1869/70, places Ahmet Nuri in Istanbul, the birthplace, as an official (Memur). The annual lists then follow Ahmet Nuri to seven places in 19 years, from Durrës (Dıraç) to Vize, with a rise to district governor (Kaymakam) in 1874/75 and to Vilayet Meclisi Riyaseti in 1876/77, then Çorlu from 1888 to 1896. Ahmet Nuri then moved to Karacaali from 1896 to 1899. The last posts were in Sultanyeri from 1899 to 1907. Few officials served in as many places; fewer than 3 per cent of the 5,200 officials with a place of service did.
Pay rose from 100 kuruş a month in 1869/70 to a peak of 2,500 in 1896/97, as Kaymakam in Karacaali, when 98 per cent of paid officials earned less. The peak lasted a single year; the next list gives 2,250 kuruş. Over the years with a salary, pay stood on average in the top 10.7 per cent of each year's paid officials, a standing reached by fewer than 3 per cent of the 3,805 officials paid for five years or more. The last annual entry is for 1906/07. Ahmet Nuri received a rank (rütbe).
