Life#
Born in Istanbul in 1846/47 (AH 1263) into the Muslim (Müslüman) community, Ahmet Reşid Bey was the child of an army major (binbaşı). Schooling took seven years, at a middle school (Rüşdiye Mektebi); Ahmet Reşid also attended the telegraph school.
At about 21, in 1868/69, Ahmet Reşid began work in Istanbul, with one unpaid year as a mülazım (apprentice) before a first salary of 250 kuruş. The annual lists begin in 1869/70, with Ahmet Reşid as a communications official (Muhabere Memuru) in Istanbul, the birthplace. Ahmet Reşid then moved to İnebolu from 1871 to 1876, with a rise to director of the second grade (2. Müdür), then Üsküdar in 1876/77. The annual lists then follow Ahmet Reşid back to Istanbul from 1877 to 1884. From 1884 to 1904 the annual entries place Ahmet Reşid in Damascus (Şam), first as 1. Müdür, from 1896/97 as 2. Müdür and from 1899/1900 as a director of the first grade (1. Müdür).
Pay rose from 250 kuruş a month in 1869/70 to a peak of 1,200 in 1884/85, as 1. Müdür in Damascus, when 86 per cent of paid officials earned less. Over 36 years the salaries add up to 418,080 kuruş, 1.9 times what an official on the median salary earned.
