Life#
Feyzi Efendi was born in Istanbul in 1846/47 (AH 1263) into the Muslim (Müslüman) community. Schooling took four years, at Medrese, the Islamic college; Feyzi also attended the telegraph school.
Work began in the telegraph service (Telgraf) in Istanbul in 1864/65, at about 17, paid from the start, on 1,000 kuruş a month. The first annual entry, for 1864/65, places Feyzi in Istanbul, the birthplace, as a director of the second grade (2. Müdür). The annual lists then follow Feyzi to Aydın from 1865 to 1867, then Mentese from 1867 to 1878. The last posts were in Balıkesir and Istanbul from 1878 to 1881 and Siirt in 1882/83, with a rise to 2. Müdür in 1878/79.
The salary went from 1,000 kuruş a month in 1864/65 to 1,800 in 1882/83, the peak, as Sancak Muhasebecisi in Siirt, when 92 per cent of paid officials earned less.
