Life#
Reşat Efendi was born in Istanbul in 1847/48 (AH 1264), into the Muslim (Müslüman) community, and the father's occupation was "Ascibasi (Esma Sultanin)". At about 9, in 1856/57, Reşat began work in Istanbul, paid from the start, on 100 kuruş a month. Only 12 of the 5,128 officials whose age at first work is known began work at 9 or younger. The annual lists begin in 1864/65, with Reşat as Enderunu Humayun in Istanbul, the birthplace. Reşat then moved to five places in five years, then back to Istanbul from 1871 to 1878. Next came Thessaloniki (Selanik) from 1886 to 1891, then Aydın from 1891 to 1894. The last posts were in Istanbul again from 1894 to 1897, with a rise to PT Nezareti Meclisi Azasi.
Pay rose from 100 kuruş a month in 1864/65 to a peak of 4,500 in 1895/96, as PT Nezareti Meclisi Azasi in Istanbul, when 99 per cent of paid officials earned less. The peak lasted a single year; the next list gives 3,690 kuruş. Over 25 years the salaries add up to 642,504 kuruş, 3.9 times the median official's, a level reached by fewer than 3 per cent of the 3,805 officials paid for five years or more. Pay rose to 45 times the first salary; only 38 of the 2,859 officials paid for ten years or more rose as far. The final annual entry is for 1896/97.
