Life#
Ömer Mustafa Bey was born in Medina (Medine) in 1854/55 (AH 1271) into the Muslim (Müslüman) community; the father's occupation was "Muhendis". Schooling took 12 years, at the Imperial School (Mekteb-i Sultani).
Work began in Aydın in 1871/72, at about 16, with five unpaid years as a mülazım (apprentice) before a first salary of 300 kuruş. Every annual entry from 1876/77 to 1884/85 places Ömer Mustafa in Istanbul, first in the office of the corresponding secretary (Mektubi Kalemi), from 1884/85 in the accounts office (Muhasebe Kalemi).
Pay rose from 300 kuruş a month in 1876/77 to a peak of 430 in 1884/85, in the Muhasebe Kalemi in Istanbul, when 37 per cent of paid officials earned less. In all, ten years of salary come to 43,560 kuruş, 67 per cent of what an official on the median salary earned in those years. The final annual entry is for 1884/85.
