Life#
Mehmet Nuri Efendi was born in Uşak in 1854/55 (AH 1271) into the Muslim (Müslüman) community; the father was a farmer (çiftçi). Schooling took four years, at a school for young children (Sıbyan Mektebi).
Mehmet Nuri began work in Istanbul in 1873/74, at about 18, with three unpaid years as a mülazım (apprentice) before a first salary of 200 kuruş. The annual lists begin in 1876/77, with Mehmet Nuri in the dispatch office (Sevk Kalemi) in Istanbul. The last posts were in Bursa from 1878 to 1880 and Uşak, the birthplace, in 1880/81, with a rise to communications official (Muhabere Memuru) in 1878.
The salary went from 200 kuruş a month in 1876/77 to 500 in 1880/81, the peak, as 3. Müdür in Uşak, when 47 per cent of paid officials earned less. The final annual entry is for 1880/81. Mehmet Nuri probably has an entry in "Tanzimat'tan II. Meşrutiyet'e Uşak kazasında ilmȋ ve kültürel hayat (1839-1908)" by VELİ DOMBAYCI (2016) (the name, the birthplace and a place of service agree).
