Life#
Born in Istanbul in 1854/55 (AH 1271), Oseb Yosef Efendi came from the Armenian Christian (Ermeni) community; the father was a merchant (tüccar). Oseb Yosef had seven years of schooling, at a French school (Fransız Mektebi), and wrote French as well as Turkish.
At about 21, in 1876/77, Oseb Yosef began work in Istanbul, paid from the start, on 500 kuruş a month. Every annual entry from 1876/77 to 1903/04 places Oseb Yosef in the same office, Tahrirati Ecnebiye Kalemi, in Istanbul, the birthplace. Only 41 of the 1,586 officials whose entries span 20 years or more kept one title in one place throughout.
