Life#
Born in Istanbul in 1838/39 (AH 1254), Jory Raymon Efendi came from the Greek Orthodox Christian (Rum) community; the father's occupation was "Muhendis". In all Jory Raymon knew five languages, French, Greek (Rum) and Italian in writing, Turkish in speech and English a little; fewer than 2 per cent of the 5,211 officials knew as many.
Work began in Istanbul in 1858/59, at about 20, with one unpaid year as a mülazım (apprentice) before a first salary of 750 kuruş. The first annual entry, for 1860/61, places Jory Raymon in Tulcea (Tulça) as an official for foreign communications (Muhaberat-ı Ecnebiye Memuriyeti). Next came Beyoğlu and Beirut (Beyrut) from 1862 to 1867, then Suriye from 1867 to 1872, with a rise to inspector (Müfettiş). From 1873 to 1903 the annual entries place Jory Raymon in Istanbul, the birthplace, first in the Fen Kalemi, from 1874/75 in the Tahrirati Ecnebiye Kalemi. Few careers in the lists are as long; fewer than 2 per cent of the 5,211 officials have entries spanning 44 years or more.
The salary went from 750 kuruş a month in 1860/61 to 2,400 in 1895/96, the peak, in the Tahrirati Ecnebiye Kalemi in Istanbul, when 97 per cent of paid officials earned less. The peak lasted a single year; the next list gives 2,160 kuruş. After the last annual entry, for 1902/03, the list of 1903/04 (AH 1321) gives the status word Vefat (death).
