Life#
İlya Dakos Efendi was born in Istanbul in 1841/42 (AH 1257) into the Latin Catholic (Latin) community. Schooling took seven years, at a French school (Fransız Mektebi); İlya Dakos also wrote French and Italian.
İlya Dakos began work in Vlorë (Avlonya) in 1862/63, at about 21, paid from the start, on 576 kuruş a month. The first annual entry, for 1862/63, places İlya Dakos in Vlorë as an official for foreign communications (Muhaberat-ı Ecnebiye Memuriyeti), where the entries run to 1864/65. Next came Izmir (İzmir) from 1867 to 1871, then Çeşme from 1871 to 1884. From 1885 to 1899 the annual entries place İlya Dakos in Galata. Few careers in the lists are as long; fewer than 5 per cent of the 5,211 officials have entries spanning 38 years or more.
