Life#
Ali Cenap Efendi was born in Istanbul in 1866/67 (AH 1283) into the Muslim (Müslüman) community. Schooling took 12 years, at Darüşşafaka, the school for orphans in Istanbul; Ali Cenap also attended the telegraph school, wrote French as well as Turkish and held a qualification (a diploma, certificate, training or decoration).
Ali Cenap began work in Istanbul in 1883/84, at about 17, paid from the start, on 150 kuruş a month. The first annual entry, for 1883/84, places Ali Cenap in Galata as an official for outgoing items (Mersule Memuru), where the entries run to 1900/01, with a rise to a post in the sorting room (Tefrik Odası) in 1896/97. Ali Cenap then moved to Istanbul in 1901/02. The last posts were in Galata again from 1902 to 1905.
The salary went from 150 kuruş a month in 1883/84 to 550 in 1902/03, the peak, in the Tefrik Odası in Galata, when 65 per cent of paid officials earned less. The last annual entry is for 1905/06.
