Life#
Born in Istanbul in 1866/67 (AH 1283) into the Muslim (Müslüman) community, Hasan Sani Efendi was the child of a tradesman (esnaf). Work began in Istanbul in 1882/83, at about 16, paid from the start, on 50 kuruş a month. The first annual entry, for 1882/83, places Hasan Sani in Beyoğlu as a communications official (Muhabere Memuru). Next came Galata in 1884/85, and Edremit in 1885/86, as Muhabere Memuru, then Tripoli (Trablusgarp) from 1886 to 1891. Hasan Sani then moved back to Beyoğlu from 1891 to 1894, then back to Tripoli from 1894 to 1902, with a rise to director of the first grade (1. Müdür). The last posts were in Konya from 1902 to 1907. The posts lie on three continents, Africa, Asia and Europe, as for fewer than 2 per cent of the 5,200 officials with a place of service.
Pay rose from 50 kuruş a month in 1882/83 to a peak of 1,500 in 1894/95, as 1. Müdür in Tripoli, when 94 per cent of paid officials earned less. In all, 25 years of salary come to 310,200 kuruş, 2.1 times what an official on the median salary earned in those years. Pay rose to 30 times the first salary; fewer than 3 per cent of the 2,859 officials paid for ten years or more rose as far. The final annual entry is for 1906/07.
