Life#
Mahmut Efendi was born in Istanbul in 1871/72 (AH 1288) into the Muslim (Müslüman) community. Schooling took seven years, at a middle school (Rüşdiye Mektebi); Mahmut also wrote French, Greek (Rum) and Turkish.
Work began in Istanbul in 1880/81, at about 10, with two unpaid years as a mülazım (apprentice) before a first salary of 200 kuruş. Only 33 of the 5,128 officials whose age at first work is known began work at 10 or younger. Every annual entry from 1882/83 to 1899/1900 places Mahmut in the same post, official (Memur), in Beyoğlu.
The salary went from 200 kuruş a month in 1882/83 to 550 in 1899/1900, the peak, as Memur in Beyoğlu, when 68 per cent of paid officials earned less. In all, 18 years of salary come to 73,500 kuruş, 68 per cent of what an official on the median salary earned in those years. The final annual entry is for 1899/1900.
