Life#
Ahmet Hamdi Efendi was born in Istanbul in 1871/72 (AH 1288) into the Muslim (Müslüman) community; the father was an imam. Schooling took seven years, at a middle school (Rüşdiye Mektebi).
At about 18, in 1889/90, Ahmet Hamdi began work in Istanbul, with five unpaid years as a mülazım (apprentice) before a first salary of 100 kuruş. The annual lists begin in 1894/95, with Ahmet Hamdi as a communications official (Muhabere Memuru) in Büyükdere. Next came Sarıyer from 1896 to 1903. The last posts were in Tarabya from 1903 to 1906.
Pay rose from 100 kuruş a month in 1894/95 to a peak of 210 in 1905/06, as Muhabere Memuru in Tarabya, when 13 per cent of paid officials earned less. In all, 12 years of salary come to 21,600 kuruş, 30 per cent of what an official on the median salary earned in those years. The final annual entry is for 1905/06.
