Life#
Born in Istanbul in 1871/72 (AH 1288), Aziz Mahmut Efendi came from the Muslim (Müslüman) community; the father was a customs official (rüsumat memuru). Schooling took 12 years, at Darüşşafaka, the school for orphans in Istanbul; Aziz Mahmut also attended the telegraph school and wrote French as well as Turkish.
Work began in Istanbul in 1894/95, at about 23, paid from the start, on 400 kuruş a month. The annual lists begin in 1894/95, with Aziz Mahmut as an official for foreign communications (Muhaberat-ı Ecnebiye Memuriyeti) in Istanbul, the birthplace. Next came Beyoğlu, Galata and Az Zaydiyah (Zeydiye) from 1895 to 1899, then Yemen from 1899 to 1905, with a rise to communications official (Muhabere Memuru). In 1905/06 the lists place Aziz Mahmut in Bajil (Bacil), with a rise to director of the second grade (2. Müdür). Yemen, about 3,200 km from Istanbul, was the post farthest from the birthplace; fewer than 2 per cent of the 5,162 officials with a known birthplace and place of service served as far from home.
The salary went from 400 kuruş a month in 1894/95 to 1,200 in 1905/06, the peak, as 2. Müdür in Bajil, when nine in ten paid officials earned less. The last annual entry is for 1905/06.
