Life#
Kazım Bey was born in Istanbul in 1856/57 (AH 1273), into the Muslim (Müslüman) community, and the father's occupation was "Tuggeneral". Schooling took seven years, at a middle school (Rüşdiye Mektebi).
Work began in Sofia (Sofya) in 1875/76, at about 18, paid from the start, on 400 kuruş a month. The annual lists begin in 1881/82, with Kazım as a central office official (Merkez Memuru) in Istanbul, the birthplace, where the entries run to 1883/84. Kazım then moved to Edirne from 1884 to 1891, then Şarköy from 1891 to 1893. The annual lists then follow Kazım to Çanakkale from 1893 to 1898. The last posts were in Yemen from 1898 to 1907, first as a communications official (Muhabere Memuru), from 1905/06 in the correspondence office (Tahrirat Kalemi). The farthest post, Yemen, lay about 3,200 km from Istanbul, and fewer than 2 per cent of the 5,162 officials with a known birthplace and place of service served as far from the birthplace.
The salary went from 400 kuruş a month in 1881/82 to 1,000 in 1899/1900, the peak, as Muhabere Memuru in Yemen, when 88 per cent of paid officials earned less.
