Life#
Born in Istanbul in 1854/55 (AH 1271), Mustafa Efendi came from the Muslim (Müslüman) community; the father was a muezzin. Schooling took 14 years, at Darüşşafaka, the school for orphans in Istanbul; Mustafa also attended the telegraph school, wrote French as well as Turkish and held a qualification (a diploma, certificate, training or decoration).
At about 26, in 1880/81, Mustafa began work in Istanbul, paid from the start, on 300 kuruş a month. The annual lists begin in 1881/82, with Mustafa in the Fen Kalemi in Istanbul, the birthplace, where the entries run to 1899/1900. The last posts were in Galata in 1900/01, as a director (Müdür) and Istanbul again in 1901/02.
The salary went from 400 kuruş a month in 1881/82 to 3,400 in 1901/02, the peak, as PT Nazir Muavini in Istanbul, when 99 per cent of paid officials earned less. Over the years with a salary, pay stood on average in the top 10.4 per cent of each year's paid officials, a standing reached by fewer than 3 per cent of the 3,805 officials paid for five years or more. The final annual entry is for 1901/02.
