Life#
Born in Fransa in 1820/21 (AH 1236), Jul Lekaye Efendi came from the Christian (Hristiyan) community, French (Fransiz) by nationality; the father was a merchant (tüccar). At about 33, in 1853/54, Jul Lekaye began work in Istanbul, paid from the start, on 1,600 kuruş a month. Of the 5,128 officials whose age at first work is known, fewer than 3 per cent started at 33 or older. The annual lists begin in 1856/57, with Jul Lekaye as Telgraf Memuru in Shumen (Şumnu). Next came six places in 13 years, from Sulina (Sünne) to Thessaloniki (Selanik), then a return to Edirne from 1871 to 1878. The annual lists then follow Jul Lekaye to Istanbul from 1878 to 1879. From 1880 to 1897 the annual entries place Jul Lekaye again in Edirne. Few careers in the lists are as long; fewer than 3 per cent of the 5,211 officials have entries spanning 42 years or more.
Pay rose from 1,600 kuruş a month in 1856/57 to a peak of 3,800 in 1870/71, as Müfettiş in Thessaloniki, when 97 per cent of paid officials earned less. Over the years with a salary, pay stood on average in the top 6.5 per cent of each year's paid officials, a standing reached by 42 of the 3,805 officials paid for five years or more. After the last annual entry, for 1896/97, the list of 1897/98 (AH 1315) gives the status word Vefat (death).
