Life#
Born in Istanbul in 1832/33 (AH 1248), Ayvazoğlu Dimitraki Efendi came from the Greek Orthodox Christian (Rum) community; the father's occupation was "Terzibasi". Few officials knew Greek; only 3 of the 5,211 officials did.
Ayvazoğlu Dimitraki began work in Istanbul in 1855/56, at about 23, with one unpaid year as a mülazım (apprentice) before a first salary of 1,000 kuruş. The annual lists begin in 1856/57, with Ayvazoğlu Dimitraki in the Telgrafhane Ecnebi Kitabeti in Istanbul, the birthplace, where the entries run to 1862/63. Next came Ioannina (Yanya) from 1863 to 1865, with a rise to chief official for foreign communications (Muhaberat-ı Ecnebiye Başmemuru) in 1863/64, then Aris from 1865 to 1870, with a rise to Telgraf Mufettisi. The annual lists then follow Ayvazoğlu Dimitraki to Baghdad (Bağdat) from 1870 to 1872, then back to Istanbul from 1878 to 1887. The last post was in Galata in 1887/88.
The salary went from 1,000 kuruş a month in 1856/57 to 4,500 in 1870/71, the peak, as Telgraf Mufettisi in Baghdad, when 98 per cent of paid officials earned less. In all, 25 years of salary come to 756,000 kuruş, 4.7 times what an official on the median salary earned in those years, a level reached by fewer than 2 per cent of the 3,805 officials paid for five years or more. The final annual entry is for 1887/88.
