Life#
Born in Istanbul in 1827/28 (AH 1243), Hüseyin Hüsnü Efendi came from the Muslim (Müslüman) community; the father was a medrese teacher (müderris). Schooling took seven years, at the Irfaniye Mektebi; Hüseyin Hüsnü also wrote Turkish and had some knowledge of Arabic and Persian.
Work began in Baghdad (Bağdat) in 1844/45, at about 16, with two unpaid years as a mülazım (apprentice) before a first salary of 10 kuruş. The first annual entry, for 1857/58, places Hüseyin Hüsnü in Baghdad as Varidat Muhasebesi. From 1858 to 1898 the annual entries place Hüseyin Hüsnü in Istanbul, the birthplace, with a rise to PT EvrakKitabeti. Few careers in the lists are as long; fewer than 3 per cent of the 5,211 officials have entries spanning 42 years or more.
Pay rose from 100 kuruş a month in 1857/58 to a peak of 1,750 in 1861/62, as PT EvrakKitabeti in Istanbul, when 87 per cent of paid officials earned less.
