Life#
Born in Izmir (İzmir) in 1822/23 (AH 1238), Mehmet Sadık Efendi came from the Muslim (Müslüman) community. Mehmet Sadık had four years of schooling, at a school for young children (Sıbyan Mektebi), and wrote Turkish and had some knowledge of Arabic and Persian.
At about 26, in 1848/49, Mehmet Sadık began work in the Evkaf Kalemi in Izmir. The annual lists begin in 1871/72, with Mehmet Sadık as Sancak Muhasebecisi in Trikala (Tırhala). The last posts were in Istanbul from 1872 to 1880, first as PT EvrakKitabeti, from 1873/74 as PT Evrak Kitabeti Muduru, from 1875/76 as PT EvrakKitabeti and from 1878/79 as Muhasebeci.
The salary never rose above the first in the lists, 4,000 kuruş a month in 1871/72, as Sancak Muhasebecisi in Trikala, when 98 per cent of paid officials earned less. In all, seven years of salary come to 250,200 kuruş, 5.5 times what an official on the median salary earned in those years. Over the years with a salary, pay stood on average in the top 3.7 per cent of each year's paid officials, a standing reached by 17 of the 3,805 officials paid for five years or more.
