Life#
Born in Izmir (İzmir) in 1837/38 (AH 1253) into the Muslim (Müslüman) community, Osman Nuri Efendi was the child of a medrese teacher (müderris). Schooling took four years, at Medrese, the Islamic college.
At about 22, in 1859/60, Osman Nuri began work in the Emlak Kalemi in Izmir, paid from the start, on 250 kuruş a month. The first annual entry, for 1859/60, places Osman Nuri in Izmir, the birthplace, as Emlak Memuru, where the entries run to 1864/65. Next came Manisa from 1865 to 1867, with a rise to Basmuharriri in 1865/66, then Aydın from 1867 to 1878, with a rise to Tahrir Memuru. Osman Nuri then moved to Chios (Sakız), Biga, Prizren and Komotini (Gümülcine), four places in ten years. The lists have no entry for 1885 to 1887. The last posts were in Denizli from 1888 to 1897. Few careers in the lists are as long; fewer than 4 per cent of the 5,211 officials have entries spanning 39 years or more.
The salary went from 250 kuruş a month in 1859/60 to 1,250 in 1867/68, the peak, as Tahrir Memuru in Aydın, when 81 per cent of paid officials earned less.
