Life#
Fransuva Efendi was born in Izmir (İzmir) in 1831/32 (AH 1247), into the Greek Orthodox Christian (Rum) community. Schooling took four years, at a community school (Millet Mektebi); Fransuva also wrote French, Greek (Rum) and Turkish.
Work began in Izmir in 1873/74, at about 42, paid from the start, on 330 kuruş a month. Few began so late; 25 of the 5,128 officials whose age at first work is known started at 42 or older. From 1873/74 to 1901/02 every annual entry places Fransuva in Izmir, the birthplace, first as Seyyar Memur, from 1881/82 as a postal official (Posta Memuru) and from 1882/83 as a travelling postal official (Seyyar Memur). Of the 775 officials whose entries span 30 years or more, 11 per cent stayed in one place throughout.
The salary went from 330 kuruş a month in 1873/74 to 500 in 1901/02, the peak, as Seyyar Memur in Izmir, when half the paid officials earned less.
