Life#
Born in Diyarbakır in 1829/30 (AH 1245) into the Muslim (Müslüman) community, Hacı Mustafa Nuri Efendi was the child of a tradesman (esnaf). Mustafa Nuri had four years of schooling, at a school for young children (Sıbyan Mektebi).
At about 34, in 1863/64, Mustafa Nuri began work in Izmir (İzmir), with six unpaid years as a mülazım (apprentice) before a first salary of 330 kuruş. Few began so late; fewer than 2 per cent of the 5,128 officials whose age at first work is known started at 34 or older. From the first annual entry, for 1873/74, to 1898/99, every annual entry places Mustafa Nuri in the same post, postal official (Posta Memuru), in Izmir. A career like this is rare; 41 of the 1,586 officials whose entries span 20 years or more kept one title in one place throughout.
The salary went from 330 kuruş a month in 1873/74 to 400 in 1898/99, the peak, when 31 per cent of paid officials earned less. Over 23 years the salaries add up to 93,180 kuruş, 65 per cent of what an official on the median salary earned. The last annual entry is for 1898/99.
