Life#
Born in Istanbul in 1852/53 (AH 1269), Setrak Sarrafyan Efendi came from the Armenian Christian (Ermeni) community; the father was a tradesman (esnaf). Schooling took four years, at a community school (Millet Mektebi); Setrak Sarrafyan also wrote Armenian, French and Turkish.
Setrak Sarrafyan began work in Izmir (İzmir) in 1873/74, at about 20, paid from the start, on 400 kuruş a month. The first annual entry, for 1873/74, places Setrak Sarrafyan in Izmir as an official for foreign communications (Muhaberat-ı Ecnebiye Memuriyeti). The annual lists then follow Setrak Sarrafyan to Kadıköy in 1874/75. From 1875 to 1904 the annual entries place Setrak Sarrafyan in Beyoğlu. Fewer than 7 per cent of the 775 officials whose entries span 30 years or more kept one title throughout.
Pay rose from 400 kuruş a month in 1873/74 to a peak of 720 in 1900/01, as Muhaberat-ı Ecnebiye Memuriyeti in Beyoğlu, when 77 per cent of paid officials earned less.
