Life#
Born in Deir al-Qamar (Deyrülkamer) in 1851/52 (AH 1268), Necip Efendi came from the Maronite Christian (Maruni) community. Schooling took four years, at a community school (Millet Mektebi); Necip also wrote Arabic, French and Turkish.
Necip began work in Deyrulkamer in 1867/68, at about 16, with two unpaid years as a mülazım (apprentice) before a first salary of 200 kuruş. The first annual entry, for 1869/70, places Necip in Deir al-Qamar, the birthplace, as a communications official (Muhabere Memuru), where the entries run to 1878/79. Necip then moved to Beirut (Beyrut), Trikala (Tırhala) and Kantara from 1879 to 1884, then back to Beirut from 1884 to 1891. Next came a return to Deir al-Qamar from 1891 to 1903, with a rise to director of the second grade (2. Müdür). The last post was in Beirut again in 1903/04.
Pay rose from 200 kuruş a month in 1869/70 to a peak of 750 in 1891/92, as 2. Müdür in Deir al-Qamar, when three in four paid officials earned less. In all, 36 years of salary come to 226,260 kuruş, about what an official on the median salary earned in those years. The last annual entry is for 1903/04.
