Life#
David Efendi was born in Diyarbakır in 1851/52 (AH 1268) into the Armenian Christian (Ermeni) community; the father was a tradesman (esnaf). Schooling took four years, at a community school (Millet Mektebi); David also wrote Armenian as well as Turkish.
David began work in Diyarbakır in 1875/76, at about 23, paid from the start, on 300 kuruş a month. Every annual entry from 1875/76 to 1905/06 places David in Diyarbakır, the birthplace, first as a communications official (Muhabere Memuru), from 1887/88 in the clerkship of the chief director's office (Başmüdür Kitabeti). A career like this is rare; 11 per cent of the 775 officials whose entries span 30 years or more stayed in one place throughout.
The salary went from 300 kuruş a month in 1875/76 to 820 in 1905/06, the peak, in the Başmüdür Kitabeti in Diyarbakır, when 82 per cent of paid officials earned less.
