Life#
Kirkor Efendi was born in Istanbul in 1850/51 (AH 1267) into the Armenian Christian (Ermeni) community. Schooling took four years, at a community school (Millet Mektebi); Kirkor also wrote Armenian, French and Turkish.
Work began in Galata in 1876/77, at about 25, paid from the start, on 500 kuruş a month. Every annual entry from 1876/77 to 1893/94 places Kirkor in Galata, first as an official of the union post (İttihat Posta Memuru), from 1880/81 as an official for incoming items (Mevrude Memuru) and from 1888/89 as a chief official (Başmemur).
The salary went from 500 kuruş a month in 1876/77 to 875 in 1888/89, the peak, as Başmemur in Galata, when 83 per cent of paid officials earned less. The last annual entry is for 1893/94; the list of 1894/95 (AH 1312) gives the status word Vefat (death).
