Life#
Born in Sliven (İslimiye) in 1850/51 (AH 1267), Yusuf Ziya Efendi came from the Muslim (Müslüman) community; the father was a merchant (tüccar). Schooling took four years, at a school for young children (Sıbyan Mektebi).
Work began in Sliven in 1869/70, at about 18, with six unpaid years as a mülazım (apprentice) before a first salary of 400 kuruş. The first annual entry, for 1876/77, places Yusuf Ziya in Alexandroupoli (Dedeağaç) as a communications official (Muhabere Memuru). Yusuf Ziya then moved to İnebolu, Sinop and Alaçam from 1877 to 1883, then Edirne from 1884 to 1891. Next came İğneada from 1892 to 1898, then Dolasirdir in 1898/99. The last posts were in Zvezdets (Göktepe) from 1899 to 1903.
Pay rose from 400 kuruş a month in 1876/77 to a peak of 600 in 1877/78, as Muhabere Memuru in İnebolu, when half the paid officials earned less. In all, 24 years of salary come to 138,240 kuruş, about what an official on the median salary earned in those years.
