Life#
Born in Veliko Tarnovo (Tırnova) in 1850/51 (AH 1267), Abdülhalil Efendi came from the Muslim (Müslüman) community; the father was a tradesman (esnaf). Abdülhalil had seven years of schooling, at a middle school (Rüşdiye Mektebi).
Work began in the telegraph service (Telgraf) in Silistra (Silistre) in 1871/72, at about 20, with five unpaid years as a mülazım (apprentice) before a first salary of 80 kuruş. The annual lists begin in 1876/77, with Abdülhalil as Cephane Cavusu in Silistra. The lists have no entry for 1878 to 1894. From 1894 to 1904 every annual entry places Abdülhalil in Eskişehir, first as Nakliye Memuru, from 1896/97 as a postal official (Posta Memuru), from 1898/99 as a transport official (Nakliye Memuru) and from 1903/04 as a travelling postal official (Seyyar Memur).
Pay rose from 80 kuruş a month in 1876/77 to a peak of 500 in 1903/04, as Seyyar Memur in Eskişehir, when 51 per cent of paid officials earned less. In all, 12 years of salary come to 45,120 kuruş, 61 per cent of what an official on the median salary earned in those years. The last annual entry is for 1903/04.
