Life#
Born in Kemaliye (Eğin) in 1868/69 (AH 1285), Ahmet Tevfik Bey came from the Muslim (Müslüman) community; the father was a tradesman (esnaf). Work began in Bilecik in 1892/93, at about 24, paid from the start, on 200 kuruş a month. The annual lists begin in 1892/93, with Ahmet Tevfik as a transport official (Nakliye Memuru) in Bilecik. Ahmet Tevfik then moved to Eskişehir from 1894 to 1901, with a rise to travelling postal official (Seyyar Memur). The last posts were in Bitola (Manastır) from 1901 to 1903.
The salary went from 200 kuruş a month in 1892/93 to 750 in 1895/96, the peak, as Seyyar Memur in Eskişehir, when 76 per cent of paid officials earned less. That salary was paid for a single year, and the next list gives 675 kuruş. The last annual entry is for 1902/03. An entry in "Sicill-i Ahvâl Defterlerine göre Osmanlı bürokrasisinde Eğinli (Kemaliyeli) Devlet adamları ..." by ÖMER FERİT İMLAK (2012) probably refers to Ahmet Tevfik, since the name and the birthplace agree.
