Life#
Ahmet Rıfat Efendi was born in Kemaliye (Eğin) in 1868/69 (AH 1285) into the Muslim (Müslüman) community. Schooling took four years, at a school for young children (Sıbyan Mektebi).
Work began in Dersim in 1884/85, at about 16, with six unpaid years as a mülazım (apprentice) before a first salary of 380 kuruş. The first annual entry, for 1890/91, places Ahmet Rıfat in Adana as a communications official (Muhabere Memuru), where the entries run to 1894/95. The annual lists then follow Ahmet Rıfat to Feke from 1895 to 1901, with a rise to director of the third grade (3. Müdür). The last posts were in Eşme from 1901 to 1903 and Salihli in 1903/04.
The salary went from 380 kuruş a month in 1890/91 to 600 in 1901/02, the peak, as 3. Müdür in Eşme, when two in three paid officials earned less. The final annual entry is for 1903/04.
