Life#
Born in Trabzon in 1868/69 (AH 1285) into the Muslim (Müslüman) community, Mustafa Harun Efendi was the child of a farmer (çiftçi). Schooling took four years, at a school for young children (Sıbyan Mektebi).
At about 24, in 1892/93, Mustafa Harun began work in Istanbul, with seven unpaid years as a mülazım (apprentice) before a first salary of 350 kuruş. Fewer than 6 per cent of the 5,142 officials with a known apprenticeship worked unpaid for seven years or longer. Every annual entry from 1899/1900 to 1905/06 places Mustafa Harun in the same post, communications official (Muhabere Memuru), in Istanbul.
The salary never rose above the first in the lists, 350 kuruş a month in 1899/1900, as Muhabere Memuru in Istanbul, when 26 per cent of paid officials earned less.
