Life#
Born in Kütahya in 1868/69 (AH 1285) into the Muslim (Müslüman) community, Ahmet Şevket Efendi was the child of a merchant (tüccar). Schooling took four years, at a school for young children (Sıbyan Mektebi).
Ahmet Şevket began work in Burdur in 1884/85, at about 16, with 11 unpaid years as a mülazım (apprentice) before a first salary of 300 kuruş. Only 31 of the 5,142 officials with a known apprenticeship worked unpaid for 11 years or longer. The annual lists begin in 1895/96, with Ahmet Şevket as a postal official (Posta Memuru) in Giresun. The last posts were in Afyonkarahisar (Karahisar-ı Sahib) from 1896 to 1902.
The salary never rose above the first in the lists, 300 kuruş a month in 1895/96, as Posta Memuru in Giresun, when 17 per cent of paid officials earned less. The peak lasted a single year; the next list gives 285 kuruş. Over seven years the salaries add up to 24,120 kuruş, 57 per cent of what an official on the median salary earned. The final annual entry is for 1901/02. Ahmet Şevket probably has an entry in "Sicill-i Ahval Defterleri'nde Osmanlı Dönemi Kütahyalı memurlar" by MUSTAFA KOCAKAYA (2018) (the name, the birthplace and the archive register and page agree).
