Life#
Born in Heraklion (Kandiye) in 1868/69 (AH 1285) into the Muslim (Müslüman) community, Ethem Bazaki(?) Efendi was the child of a tradesman (esnaf). Ethem Bazaki(?) had seven years of schooling, at a middle school (Rüşdiye Mektebi), and wrote Greek (Rum) as well as Turkish.
At about 16, in 1884/85, Ethem Bazaki(?) began work in Lasid, with 11 unpaid years as a mülazım (apprentice) before a first salary of 500 kuruş. So long an unpaid start was rare; 31 of the 5,142 officials with a known apprenticeship worked unpaid for 11 years or longer. The first annual entry, for 1895/96, places Ethem Bazaki(?) in Vamos as an official for foreign communications (Muhaberat-ı Ecnebiye Memuriyeti). The annual lists then follow Ethem Bazaki(?) to Lasid from 1896 to 1898, then Izmir (İzmir) from 1898 to 1905. The last post was in Rhodes (Rodos) in 1905/06.
The salary went from 500 kuruş a month in 1895/96 to 550 in 1901/02, the peak, as a travelling postal official (Seyyar Memur) in Izmir, when two in three paid officials earned less. The final annual entry is for 1905/06.
