Life#
Hafız Bahaeddin Efendi was born in Heraklion (Kandiye) in 1849/50 (AH 1266) into the Muslim (Müslüman) community; the father was a ship's captain (kaptan). Schooling took four years, at a school for young children (Sıbyan Mektebi); Bahaeddin also attended the telegraph school.
Bahaeddin began work in Istanbul in 1870/71, at about 20, with two unpaid years as a mülazım (apprentice) before a first salary of 380 kuruş. The annual lists begin in 1872/73, with Bahaeddin as a communications official (Muhabere Memuru) in Aleppo (Halep), where the entries run to 1875/76. Next came Sjenica (Seniçe) and Pristina (Priştine) from 1876 to 1880, then Prizren from 1881 to 1894. For 1877 to 1878 the lists have no entry. Bahaeddin then moved to Ersekë in 1894/95, as a director of the third grade (3. Müdür), then Bakva from 1895 to 1902. The last post was in Bitola (Manastır) in 1902/03.
Pay rose from 380 kuruş a month in 1872/73 to a peak of 750 in 1876/77, as Muhabere Memuru in Sjenica, when 63 per cent of paid officials earned less. That salary was paid for a single year, and the next list gives 600 kuruş. Over 29 years the salaries add up to 183,600 kuruş, about what an official on the median salary earned. After the last annual entry, for 1902/03, the list of 1903/04 (AH 1321) gives the status word Vefat (death).
