Life#
Kadri Efendi was born in Şanlıurfa (Urfa) in 1850/51 (AH 1267), into the Muslim (Müslüman) community. Schooling took four years, at a school for young children (Sıbyan Mektebi).
Work began in Aleppo (Halep) in 1872/73, at about 21, paid from the start, on 350 kuruş a month. The first annual entry, for 1872/73, places Kadri in Aleppo as a communications official (Muhabere Memuru), where the entries run to 1874/75. Kadri then moved to Erzurum from 1876 to 1878, then Diyarbakır from 1880 to 1893. The lists have no entry for 1878 to 1880. Next came Raqqa in 1893/94, then Birecik from 1894 to 1899. The annual lists then follow Kadri back to Raqqa from 1899 to 1901. The last posts were in Kilis and Hama from 1901 to 1906 and Gaziantep (Antep) in 1906/07, with a rise to director of the second grade (2. Müdür) in 1904/05.
Pay rose from 350 kuruş a month in 1872/73 to a peak of 850 in 1906/07, as 2. Müdür in Gaziantep, when 82 per cent of paid officials earned less. In all, 32 years of salary come to 206,040 kuruş, about what an official on the median salary earned in those years. The final annual entry is for 1906/07.
