Life#
Born in Sivas in 1850/51 (AH 1267), Ahmet Reşit Efendi came from the Muslim (Müslüman) community. Schooling took four years, at a school for young children (Sıbyan Mektebi).
Work began in Sivas in 1867/68, at about 16, with three unpaid years as a mülazım (apprentice) before a first salary of 250 kuruş. The first annual entry, for 1870/71, places Ahmet Reşit in Şebinkarahisar (Karahisar-ı Şarki) as a registry clerk (Mukayyit), where the entries run to 1872/73. Ahmet Reşit then moved back to Sivas, the birthplace, from 1875 to 1881, with a rise to communications official (Muhabere Memuru), then Kirkuk in 1881/82, as a director of the second grade (2. Müdür). The last posts were in Sivas again from 1883 to 1892.
Pay rose from 250 kuruş a month in 1870/71 to a peak of 950 in 1881/82, as 2. Müdür in Kirkuk, when 83 per cent of paid officials earned less. The final annual entry is for 1891/92. Ahmet Reşit probably has an entry in "Sicill-i Ahval Defterlerine göre Sivaslı devlet adamları" by NESLİHAN EROL (2022) (the name, the birthplace and a place of service agree).
