Life#
Born in Istanbul in 1850/51 (AH 1267), Ahmet Nail Efendi came from the Muslim (Müslüman) community; the father was an army major (binbaşı). Schooling took four years, at a school for young children (Sıbyan Mektebi).
Work began in Istanbul in 1868/69, at about 17, with half a year without pay as a mülazım (apprentice) before a first salary of 384 kuruş. Every annual entry from 1868/69 to 1871/72 places Ahmet Nail in the same post, communications official (Muhabere Memuru), in Üsküdar.
Pay rose from 384 kuruş a month in 1868/69 to a peak of 400 in 1870/71, as Muhabere Memuru in Üsküdar, when one in five paid officials earned less. In all, four years of salary come to 17,436 kuruş, 61 per cent of what an official on the median salary earned in those years. The final annual entry is for 1871/72.
