Life#
Born in Istanbul in 1850/51 (AH 1267) into the Armenian Christian (Ermeni) community, Dikran Yüzbaşıyan Efendi was the child of a merchant (tüccar). Schooling took nine years, at the Fererler Mektebi. In all Dikran Yüzbaşıyan knew four languages, Armenian, French and Turkish in writing and Greek (Rum) in speech; fewer than 5 per cent of the 5,211 officials knew as many. Of the 5,146 officials with a school, 2 studied at Fererler Mektebi.
At about 15, in 1865/66, Dikran Yüzbaşıyan began work in Istanbul, with three unpaid years as a mülazım (apprentice) before a first salary of 400 kuruş. The annual lists begin in 1868/69, with Dikran Yüzbaşıyan as a communications official (Muhabere Memuru) in Gelibolu, where the entries run to 1870/71. From 1871 to 1904 the annual entries place Dikran Yüzbaşıyan in Beyoğlu, first as Muhabere Memuru, from 1892/93 as an official for foreign communications (Muhaberat-ı Ecnebiye Memuriyeti).
The salary went from 400 kuruş a month in 1868/69 to 750 in 1876/77, the peak, as Muhabere Memuru in Beyoğlu, when 63 per cent of paid officials earned less. Over 37 years the salaries add up to 276,420 kuruş, 1.2 times what an official on the median salary earned. The final annual entry is for 1903/04.
