Life#
Born in Istanbul in 1840/41 (AH 1256) into the Armenian Christian (Ermeni) community, Kirkor Kakmaciyan Efendi was the child of a jeweller (kuyumcu). At about 25, in 1865/66, Kirkor Kakmaciyan began work in Istanbul, with two unpaid years as a mülazım (apprentice) before a first salary of 320 kuruş. The annual lists begin in 1867/68, with Kirkor Kakmaciyan as a communications official (Muhabere Memuru) in Beyoğlu, where the entries run to 1872/73. Next came Niš (Niş) from 1873 to 1876, then a return to Beyoğlu from 1876 to 1895, with a rise to a post in the dispatch office (Sevk Kalemi) in 1893/94. The annual lists then follow Kirkor Kakmaciyan to Mytilene (Midilli) from 1895 to 1903, then Ayvalık in 1903/04. The last posts were in Al-Faw (Fav) from 1904 to 1907, with a rise to Huk Memuru. Few careers in the lists are as long; fewer than 3 per cent of the 5,211 officials have entries spanning 41 years or more. The farthest post, Al-Faw, lay about 2,100 km from Istanbul, and fewer than 6 per cent of the 5,162 officials with a known birthplace and place of service served as far from the birthplace.
The salary went from 320 kuruş a month in 1867/68 to 1,000 in 1904/05, the peak, as Huk Memuru in Al-Faw, when 87 per cent of paid officials earned less. The final annual entry is for 1906/07.
