Life#
Antuvan Jean Daliço Efendi was born in Istanbul in 1840/41 (AH 1256) into the Latin Catholic (Latin) community; the father's occupation was "Sersofracı-i hazret-i şehriyari". Schooling took four years, at the Lazisi Papaz Mektebi. Antuvan Jean Daliço knew four languages, French, Greek (Rum) and Italian in writing and Turkish in speech, a number reached by fewer than 5 per cent of the 5,211 officials.
At about 18, in 1858/59, Antuvan Jean Daliço began work in Istanbul, with three unpaid years as a mülazım (apprentice) before a first salary of 200 kuruş. The annual lists begin in 1861/62, with Antuvan Jean Daliço as a communications official (Muhabere Memuru) in Istanbul, the birthplace. Antuvan Jean Daliço then moved to Volos (Golos), Beyoğlu, Galata and Van, four places in eight years, then Niš (Niş) from 1871 to 1876. Next came Sofia in 1876/77, then a return to Beyoğlu from 1877 to 1880. From 1880 to 1893 the annual entries place Antuvan Jean Daliço again in Istanbul, first as an official for foreign communications (Muhaberat-ı Ecnebiye Memuriyeti), from 1888/89 as an examining clerk (Mümeyyiz).
The salary went from 200 kuruş a month in 1861/62 to 1,750 in 1871/72, the peak, as Muhaberat-ı Ecnebiye Memuriyeti in Niš, when 91 per cent of paid officials earned less. After the last annual entry, for 1892/93, the list of 1893/94 (AH 1311) gives the status word Vefat (death).
