Life#
Born in Istanbul in 1831/32 (AH 1247), Armas Efendi came from the Greek Orthodox Christian (Rum) community. Schooling took four years, at a Greek Orthodox school (Rum Mektebi); Armas also wrote Turkish and spoke Greek (Rum).
Armas began work in the telegraph service (Telgraf) in Istanbul in 1863/64, at about 32, with half a year without pay as a mülazım (apprentice) before a first salary of 750 kuruş. Of the 5,128 officials whose age at first work is known, fewer than 3 per cent started at 32 or older. The first annual entry, for 1863/64, places Armas in Edirne as an official for foreign communications (Muhaberat-ı Ecnebiye Memuriyeti). The annual lists then follow Armas to Sulina in 1864/65, then Pristina (Priştine) from 1865 to 1873. Armas then moved to Samsun from 1873 to 1881, then Trabzon from 1881 to 1898. The last entry, for 1898/99, names neither a title nor a place.
Pay rose from 750 kuruş a month in 1863/64 to a peak of 1,000 in 1864/65, as Muhaberat-ı Ecnebiye Memuriyeti in Sulina, when 63 per cent of paid officials earned less. In all, 36 years of salary come to 405,600 kuruş, 1.8 times what an official on the median salary earned in those years. The final annual entry is for 1898/99.
