Life#
Kostantin Mavromati Efendi was born in Istanbul in 1833/34 (AH 1249), into the Christian (Hristiyan) community, Italian (Italyan) by nationality. Schooling took seven years, at a French school (Fransız Mektebi); Kostantin Mavromati also wrote English, French and Italian.
Kostantin Mavromati began work in Istanbul in 1863/64, at about 30, paid from the start, on 560 kuruş a month. Fewer than 4 per cent of the 5,128 officials whose age at first work is known began work at 30 or older. From 1863/64 to 1899/1900 every annual entry places Kostantin Mavromati in Istanbul, the birthplace, first in the correspondence office (Tahrirat Kalemi), from 1889/90 as an official for foreign communications (Muhaberat-ı Ecnebiye Memuriyeti). Entries spanning 38 years are rare, reached by fewer than 5 per cent of the 5,211 officials.
